I love being half creative, half businesswoman.
Businesswoman: crafting a message, fulfilling a need, building a business, and building a business opportunity for others.
I need my garden and art
WITHOUT a garden and the ability to spend time outside (making something artful whenever possible), I get crabby, edgy, pent up. I forget how to have grace and joy. I can start complaining, and, if I go too long, I start forgetting that there’s a point to anything.
WITH my art and garden, I have learned about composting, small fruit pruning and nurturing (including odd fruits like haskap, aronia, juneberry, medlar), painting on found metals, reusing various types of discarded wood, fabric, furniture, clothing, paper, and books. I’ve turned record albums into garden decorations, shelving supports into garden hangars, cardboard into mulch, kitchen scraps into soil, shutters into signboards, rusted bar stools into beauties, plain leather hiking boots into inspiring walking canvases. I’ve made earrings, altered books, painted furniture, treasure boxes, illustrations, greeting cards, gift bags, art journals, and the most ingenious and unusual couch cushion covers you’ve ever seen.
WITH great food from our garden I’ve turned our aronia into juice and confit, munched down on breathtakingly beautiful fresh plums, made blackberry pie / turnovers / smoothies, and made every apple dish anyone can think of. Even if it doesn’t grow in our backyard, I need to cook delicious and nourishing wholesome food. For many years I also created loads of fresh veg/fruit juices, and they were always a particular burst of color and nutrition. In my keto practice, I’ve experimented with a wide range of fathead dough, chaffles, muffins, and pizzas, plus honed my soup-making skills, my chicken-roasting skills, and my veggie prep night. While I often fall prey to the food the rest of my family eats, I feel great more often than not because I largely eat in a way that keeps me in ketosis, and I make it FUN.
I need business
WITHOUT a business to work on, I get a little too soft, my mind weakens, I feel like I don’t understand what’s going on in the world or how to participate.
WITH a business, I’ve learned my way around Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, WordPress, PayPal, Stripe, Kartra, MailChimp, Amazon, eBay, Square, Da Vinci Resolve (for video editing), Slack, SquareSpace, FaceTime, Signal, Drafts, Descript, Zoom, Movavi video editing tools, Jungle Scout, Manage by Stats, Google Analytics, FlowPage, various keyword tools, and a lot more. Going way back, it was the reason I learned Excel, Word, PowerPoint, InDesign, FIlemaker Pro, Publisher, iMovie, and Google Drive.
Over my 13 years of running businesses, I’ve grown so much, because my business pushed me to.
I’ve hosted a telesummit, I got over my self-consciousness enough to film, edit, and post 80+ videos, learned to sell face-to-face to strangers, and got 5 products sold in every Whole Foods in my region. An article I wrote got to page one of Google. I became a professional Amazon seller, promoting and building 4 brands to successful sales levels. I’ve written 3 e-books. I’ve coached others: to find the path they are born to travel, to sell on Amazon, to build traffic through Pinterest, and to use a game I’ve created to plan the week in a soulful and foolproof way.
I need down time & the outdoors
And all that is exhilarating, curiosity-inducing, keeps my brain fresh, and makes me a little money ~ to spend on art supplies! But then I need to get out on the earth, feeling the sun and the wind and the rain, do barefoot yoga in the grass, swim in the river, walk in the woods with the dogs, and laugh with friends around a campfire (with or without drums) to really feel like a human. My husband and I play and sing together, and my friends and I have drummed together monthly for years, and will again as soon as we get this virus under control. I love hot baths on cold winter nights, and cold swims every summer day.
This website is about feeling like a human
I make videos about things I paint, native Vermont fruit trees in our mini-orchard, hikes, transformations of “junk” from the dump, what I cook and eat, juicing, my keto way of eating, and general joy.
My Instagram also highlights photos of all these, but because photos are so much simpler and faster than video, there’s more volume there. Here it’s more crafted.
My hope is that I can help you business-types add more creativity to your work and your personal life, and that I can help you creatives build a business so you don’t hafta go get a job.
Do you have a “work-side” or “business-side” that you need to balance in the same way?
Let’s have some fun together!
